john kerry was not the right guy to play mitt romney, anything like that? >> no, because, you know, i don't know how you can say that, because in a way, mitt romney and john kerry are very formal people, they are obviously well educated people with a kind of refinement about them, they aren't sloppy in any way, obnoxious in any way, they use firm language but both basically strong people, in the accomplishment, it was probably a very good pick but the romney that came in last night i would say you were right a couple of minutes ago, that romney was not predictable, he came in so strong and so in charge that he basically took over the room and i felt he was sufficient on that stage meaning the president didn't need to be on there for romney to put on the show or jim lehrer, it was romney control of that space and physical control of that space which was so dominant, i don't think we have seen anything like it before. >> rose:. >> in probably a presidential debate. >> rose: i also heard this was not a new romney in the context of have i seen him before. >> yes, mike barnicle saw him i

from massachusetts? >> we both know john kerry well and yes, all of those things are true but john kerry is also really smart and a great debater. we saw that firsthand in 2004. and he knows mitt romney. he's seen him up close. he followed him in his career in public life there in massachusetts. he knows the record. and i think most importantly he has a very good bedside manner with barack obama. they're very comfortable with one another and that's a big part of the process is running your paces with someone that you trust and you who understands you. >> jennifer: for sure. the romney campaign has chosen somebody who must have a really good bedside manner as well because he's been selected several times to be a stand-in. ohio senator rob portman is playing president obama for mitt romney. he was also a stand-in for john edwards, senator john edwards, vice president al gore, senator joe lieberman. why is he the go-to stand-in guy? >> he's a pretty smart character and cookie, too. i think having been a congressman,

that the president's passive performance and it was quite passive, listless, may have been attributed in part to john kerry, his sparring partner in the prep sessions who is a leading contender to be secretary of state maybe not going tough toe-to-toe to him. my subsequent reporting has, in fact, contradicted that. john kerry, i was told by two eye witnesses was actually tougher inside than mitt romney was with barack obama. >> woodruff: so that's not it. >> no, i don't think that-- i do think what we concluded before, at least i heard several wise people say, presidential debates don't matter. this one mattered. the republicans were heading for the life boats before wednesday. i mean there was a sense of inevitability that romney was slipping, that he was going to lose. and that was totally turned around by what happened. he wiped the slate clean of what had been a bad, bad month of stumbles and gaffes and everything else. and the sense that the president was the inevitable winner i think was pierced. i don't think it was broken but i think it was pierced. and i think most of all, i come back to wha

who won the debate. i used to be one of those guys. i knew for sure that john kerry won all three of his debates against george bush. but of course he didn't. this is a good time to think about what it means to win a debate. in high school and college debates there are judges to decide which debaters who actually won. those debates have real winners. winners who get real trophies. no one got a trophy but plenty of people guessed at who would have gotten a trophy. the question is they were debating for votes and those votes wouldn't be counted until next month. so all of the winner talk you have withbeen hearing is just guessing and all of the guessers have been wrong before. my guess is about who won debates have been wrong many times which is why it was so easy for me to resist guessing who one last night. you know court reporters are smarter about this. court reporters have seen high priced defense lawyers deliver brilliant closing arguments. court reporters don't even say who won. they wait, they wait hours sometimes days for the jury to vote and then tell them who won. court r
